Ohio State’s 2027 class is 19 commitments spread over 18 high schools, and all eighteen played this week: Cibolo Steele on Thursday, October 8, the other seventeen on Friday, October 9. Fifteen won. The only plays of the week we can credit to a member of the class by name came in one of the three losses.
The catch in Massillon
Massillon Washington came into Friday unbeaten and hosted Cornerstone Christian, from San Antonio. The account below is from Don Engelhardt, writing for massillontigers.com, which is the Massillon Tiger Football Booster Club’s own site. It is a partisan source and we name it as one; the plays it describes are the facts we take from it.
By Engelhardt’s account the game was tied 7-7 at halftime. After Cornerstone went ahead 14-7, Deontay Malone returned the kickoff to the Massillon 49 to start the drive that tied it 14-14. Cornerstone running back Jaylen McKane then put the visitors back in front in the fourth quarter on a fourth-down run from the 3. On Massillon’s answer, quarterback Rasmus Haines was flushed out of the pocket at his own 27 and scrambled to his right. Engelhardt:
“Haines then fired a desperation pass to a leaping Malone. Malone then shed two potential tacklers before racing to the endzone to finish off a 73-yard touchdown pass for the tying points.”
That made it 21-21. Cornerstone scored the last two touchdowns, a 50-yard pass with just over five minutes left and a 53-yard run by McKane, his third touchdown of the night, and won 35-21. Engelhardt credits McKane with most of Cornerstone’s 208 rushing yards and writes that holding penalties brought back Massillon’s “good gains” time and again, a touchdown run by Savior Owens among them. He suggests the absence of several key starters may have played a part.
The loss came the same day Judge Andrew Logan ruled against Brayton and Brydon Feister in their eligibility case (our report). Engelhardt counts the loss as the end of a seven-game winning streak. The MaxPreps page this story counts from shows six wins before Friday, one of them the September 25 game it credits only to “Varsity Opponent,” so the 5-1 below is a floor. Three weeks ago Engelhardt credited Malone with the last pass breakup that beat St. Edward.
The scores
Every final below is the school’s own MaxPreps schedule page, as it read on Saturday, October 10. These are TEAM results. A school’s win is not a claim that its commit played, and where we know he did, a section of this story says so and names who reported it.

- Massillon Washington (Deontay Malone) lost 35-21 at home to Cornerstone Christian and is 5-1.
- Godwin (Brody McNeel) lost 40-13 at Glen Allen and is 3-4.
Sierra Canyon, Jackson Academy, St. Thomas Aquinas and Central Catholic won by shutout, and no class school was shut out. The closest finish was St. Clairsville’s one-point win over Brooke. After the week, eight of the 18 schools have not lost a game, and those eight carry nine of the nineteen commitments, one school fewer than a week earlier because of Massillon. Two records are floors: Millbrook’s 6-0 leaves out its September 25 game with Rolesville, which MaxPreps still shows at 10-10 with the overtime unplayed, and Massillon’s 5-1 leaves out the “Varsity Opponent” game above.
On the watch list
Princeton, the school of uncommitted running back Jordan Hall, won 60-6 at Hamilton and is 8-0 on its MaxPreps page. Hall has said he will choose between Missouri, Ohio State and Penn State on October 23 (our report), the night Princeton hosts Fairfield. Princeton hosts Oak Hills first, on October 16.
