Ohio State’s 2027 class is 19 commitments spread over 18 high schools. On Friday, October 2, fourteen of those schools played, and two of them played each other: St. Thomas Aquinas, with Wyatt Smith and Jaden Carey, went to Hollywood, Florida, to face Angelo Smith’s Chaminade-Madonna. Counting that game once for each school, the class’s schools went 9-5.
The only play of the night we can credit to a member of the class by name came in that game, and it decided it.
The block
Chaminade-Madonna led 20-7 early in the third quarter. Jon Van Hoozer of High School On SI reported that St. Thomas Aquinas then scored the last 14 points of the game, with backup quarterback Cody Conness in for Blake Calixte and backup running back Ryan Mathis scoring both second-half touchdowns, the second on a screen pass that, with the extra point, put the Raiders ahead 21-20.
Chaminade-Madonna had one more drive. Van Hoozer:
“And when Chaminade lined up for a potential go-ahead field goal with 1:23 remaining, Ohio State commit Wyatt Smith blocked it.”
Nick Wilson of The Palm Beach Post wrote that Smith “got a paw on the ball at the line of scrimmage,” and asked him about it afterward:
“(I was thinking) this is the hardest that I have to come off the ball,” Smith said of the block. “We’ve got to burn the ship. There’s no coming back from that.”
St. Thomas Aquinas is 6-0, and Van Hoozer notes it is the Raiders’ second straight win over Chaminade-Madonna, which won the 2024 meeting. Neither report names Jaden Carey or Angelo Smith, so we do not say what either of them did. Angelo Smith’s Chaminade-Madonna is 4-2.
The scores
Every final below is the school’s own MaxPreps schedule page, as it read on Saturday, October 3. These are TEAM results. A school’s win is not a claim that its commit played, and where we know he did, a section of this story says so and names who reported it.
Won (9):
- Blessed Trinity Catholic (DJ Jacobs) beat Centennial 41-2 and is 6-0.
- Sierra Canyon (Marcus Fakatou) beat Loyola 41-0 and is 6-0.
- Liberty Center (Kellen Wymer) beat Evergreen 62-0 and is 7-0.
- St. Thomas Aquinas (Wyatt Smith and Jaden Carey) won 21-20 at Chaminade-Madonna and is 6-0.
- Ramsay (Karlos May) won 13-6 at Mountain Brook and is 6-1.

Lost (5):
- Wayne (Jamier Brown) lost 43-12 at Springfield and is 3-4.
- Jackson Academy (Caden Moss) lost 35-24 at Jackson Prep and is 6-1.
- Blue Springs South (Prince Goldsby) lost 45-35 at home to Liberty North and is 3-3.

- Chaminade-Madonna (Angelo Smith) lost 21-20 at home to St. Thomas Aquinas and is 4-2.
Did not play (4): Cibolo Steele (Eli Johnson), 3-1-1; Bishop Watterson (Davis Seaman), 6-0; Oviedo (Jordan Donahoo), 4-2; and Massillon Washington (Deontay Malone), 5-0.
Jackson Academy’s loss is its first, after a 6-0 start. Sierra Canyon, Liberty Center, Millbrook and Central Catholic won by shutout. After the week, nine of the 18 schools have not lost a game, and those nine carry ten of the nineteen commitments. Two of those records are floors: Millbrook’s 5-0 leaves out its September 25 game with Rolesville, which MaxPreps still shows at 10-10 with the overtime unplayed, and Massillon’s 5-0 leaves out a September 25 result the page credits only to “Varsity Opponent.”
A correction on Massillon
Last week’s story listed Massillon Washington hosting Farrell on October 2. That came from Massillon’s MaxPreps page as it read on September 27, and it was wrong. Dana Balash of WFMJ reported on September 14 that Farrell had cancelled the game because of player injuries. MaxPreps has since taken it off the page. We should have caught the cancellation before we printed the game.
Springfield takes the GWOC
Last week we circled Wayne at Springfield as the game between the two teams tied at the top of the Greater Western Ohio Conference. Kayler Smith of WDTN reported that Springfield led 17-6 at halftime and outscored Wayne 26-6 in the third quarter, and that the win left Springfield 4-0 in the league and alone in first place. Wayne is 3-1 in the conference. WDTN’s report does not mention Jamier Brown, so neither do we.
On the watch list
Princeton, the school of uncommitted running back Jordan Hall, beat Mason 47-0 and is 7-0 on its MaxPreps page. Hall has said he will choose between Missouri, Ohio State and Penn State on October 23 (our report), the night Princeton hosts Fairfield.
