Ohio State offered Zion Coger on Monday, August 17. He is a running back at Jasper High School in Jasper, Alabama, and he is in the class of 2028.
Land-Grant Holy Land’s Dan Hessler reported the offer on Tuesday morning. The date is not left on one outlet’s word: 247Sports’ own player page carries the event on its timeline, filed as “Ohio State Buckeyes offer Zion Coger” and dated August 17, 2026.
That is the whole of what happened. It is also, as far as we can find, the only Ohio State recruiting event of the week, and the class it lands in is not the one with the hole.
The two Zion Cogers on one page
Hessler calls him a four-star and puts him at No. 9 among running backs in the 247Sports Composite, No. 131 nationally and No. 8 in the state of Alabama. Every one of those numbers is on his 247Sports page, in the Composite block, exactly as printed.
The block beside it does not agree. 247Sports’ own board, the one its analysts keep rather than the industry average, rates him 90 and files him No. 180 nationally and No. 12 among running backs. The two readings sit an inch apart on the same page and describe a player forty-nine national places apart.
Neither one is wrong. They are different instruments, and this is what a 2028 evaluation looks like two and a half years out. This site printed the same split in the other direction when Christopher Vargas committed and no two services listed the same quarterback. The number we would use in prose is whichever one an outlet used, credited to that outlet, which is why both are above.
The page lists him at 6-0 and 190 pounds. It also lists 11 offers, zero visits and zero coach visits, and it says there are no Crystal Ball predictions on him at this time. Nobody has publicly forecast where he goes.
Ohio State is the newest name on a list that Alabama has been on since June
Ten of those offers carry dates on his 247Sports timeline. Read newest first, they are Ohio State on August 17, Indiana and Minnesota on June 22, Missouri on June 19, Alabama on June 8, Memphis and UAB on May 11, South Carolina on May 7, Oregon on April 29 and LSU on February 16.
So Ohio State is the last program in, by nearly two months, on a back the SEC found in the winter. Hessler frames the field as nearly a dozen offers including Alabama, Indiana, LSU, Missouri, Oregon and South Carolina, and expects Ohio State to try to get him to Columbus for a game day.
That part cannot happen yet, and the reason is a document this site publishes.
An offer is the only thing August allows
The NCAA’s fall 2026-27 Division I calendar makes August 1 through August 31 a dead period. No in-person recruiting contact or evaluation, on or off campus, and no prospect may take an official or unofficial visit at all. We read that document by eye and it is on the recruiting calendar page in full.
An offer is a phone call and a graphic. It is the one recruiting event a staff can produce this month, and it is what Ohio State produced on Monday. The zero next to visits on Coger’s page is not a signal about his interest. It is the calendar.
The first day anything else is possible is September 1, when the fall evaluation period opens and coaches can go and watch him play on a Friday night. A game day visit to Ohio Stadium sits behind that date, not this one.
The room he would join already has a back. The room that needs one is a class older
Ohio State’s 2028 class is not short at running back. Elijah Newman-Hall, a four-star, has been committed since June 2025, and Hessler’s read is that the staff wants more than one back in the cycle. The rest of that class is on the 2028 board, where every service’s reading of every commit is printed side by side rather than reconciled into one.
The 2027 class is the one with the problem, and it is a year closer to signing. It has nineteen commitments and no running back. David Gabriel Georges chose Tennessee on July 22 and took the last uncommitted back off the board with him. Jayden Miles had already gone to Florida State, one day after his Ohio State official visit.
What is left at the position in 2027 is one name and it belongs to somebody else: Nigel Newkirk, committed to Alabama since June 1, carried on our board as a flip target and No. 226 in the Composite as of August 16. That is the entire 2027 running back board. The two rooms this class has never filled are laid out in no running back, no tight end, and what the class still needs is on the needs page.
A staff that misses at a position and then offers two classes deep at the same position is not a mystery. It is the ordinary answer. It is worth saying plainly that the ordinary answer arrives a year too late for the class that needs it.
Alabama, again
Coger is the No. 8 prospect in his state on both of 247Sports’ scales, and Ohio State now has an offer out to him while Alabama has had one since June 8.
That sentence would have been strange three years ago. Ohio State had two players from the state of Alabama in its entire history, Donte Wheat in 1981 and Willie Salter in 2001, until Nick Saban retired. Eleven Warriors counted seven in three years when Karlos May committed out of Birmingham in July, and the whole count is on this site with the mechanism ESPN documented on a single recruit in 2024.
Coger is not part of that count and may never be. He has no commitment, no visit and no public prediction. What he is, today, is one more Alabama address in an Ohio State offer list that did not used to have any.
What would tell us this is real
Three things, in order. A visit date, which cannot exist before September 1. A second Ohio State touch after the evaluation period opens, which is when a staff shows whether an August graphic was a courtesy or a plan. And a Crystal Ball entry or a public lean, which on this page is currently empty.
Until one of those lands, the honest version is the one at the top: Ohio State offered a running back on Monday, in a class that already has one, while the class that has none has a single flip target and, per the NCAA, no published signing date yet to work against.
